When you hear the term “conferencing microphone system”, you might imagine a room where each participant has a microphone in front of them allowing the other participants and/or audience to hear what is being said. If this is what came to mind, you are correct; although there are several different ways of designing a conferencing system.Standard Conferencing System
The standard design typically uses standard XLR microphones that are connected to a microphone mixer. The microphone mixer will then take the mixed audio from each of the microphones and send it to local loudspeakers in the room.
This style of conferencing system does accomplish the need for everyone to hear what is being said; however there are several drawbacks and limitations to this design. The most prevalent being cable management… Because every microphone needs to be directly connected to the mixer, depending on the size of the system, the total amount of cable used can be massive. Additionally, when pulling each of those home run cables back to the mixer, some considerations need to be made such as conduit size, labor, etc.
Listen Conferencing System
From a cabling perspective, how nice would it be if you could connect each of the microphones together in a daisy chain rather than running everything back to the mixer? This would save a bundle on the amount of cable used and the installation would take a fraction of the time. Well, this is exactly the kind of conferencing systems that Listen Technologies offers. The cabling method, however, isn’t the only benefit of our system.
Remember the microphone mixer I talked about? Well, that is replaced with a control unit that can supply power and control for up to 100 microphone stations without any additional equipment with only two (2) connecting cables. Unlike the standard microphone mixer – this requires a minimum of 100 inputs for a 100 microphone system.
Another benefit is the microphone unit itself. From the built-in loudspeaker to the push-to-talk button, it literally transforms the way the participants interact in a meeting. For a more detailed explanation of how a conference microphone works, take a look at this previous post.
