Personally I cringe a bit at the commercialization of our holidays and also that I allow myself to get sucked into thinking if I don’t participate in some way then I am lame. But I love it when a special occasion is recognized or experienced in a unique and untraditional way – the less obvious the better.

One of my favorite Valentine’s Day “gifts” was when my husband taught our dog Bauer how to shake. Yes, I am one of those dog owners and Bauer is my girl. My husband knew how much I’d love that she learned a new trick. It just melted my heart that he chose Valentine’s Day as the occasion for her to demonstrate her prowess under his tutelage – which they practiced in secret. It certainly is a Valentine’s Day I’ll remember.

I was doing some online research for an upcoming blog post and came across a “Sex and Science” Valentine’s Day activity at the California Academy of Sciences. Well, that quickly got me thinking about what other interesting options there might be for Valentine’s Day. Here are a few others I came across.
