Overview

One of Listen's most sophisticated receivers, the LR-500 Programmable Display Receiver offers the signature Look&ListenTM LCD Display that shows programming status, channel, lock, battery level, and RF signal strength. Channel selector buttons are easily accessible on the front of the unit. It has channel SEEK capability and is compatible with mono or stereo headsets. It takes AA batteries (alkaline or NiMH rechargeable). SmartChargeTM capabilities prevent overcharging. It's easy to use, easy to program.

Architectural Specs

The FM receiver shall be capable of receiving on 17 wide band channels with a SNR of 70dB or greater. The receiver shall be programmable to electronically lock out unneeded channels. The receiver shall be capable of seeking channels. The device shall be able to be locked on a single channel. The device shall have an adjustable squelch. The device shall have an audio frequency response of 50 Hz to 15 KHz, ±3 dB. The device will incorporate a stereo headset jack that allows the user to plug in either a mono or stereo headset. The device shall incorporate an LCD display that indicates channel, battery level, low battery, battery charging, and RF signal strength. The receiver shall be able to function in both DX and Local mode. The unit shall operate off of 2 AA batteries. The receiver shall incorporate automatic battery charging circuitry for recharging of NiMH batteries. The Listen LR-500-863 is specified.

    What is the difference between the LR-400 and the LR-500?
    The LR-500 gives the user an opportunity to lockout unused channels.
    Can the LR-500 be used with multiple transmitters?
    Yes. We recommend the LR-500 for use with multiple transmitters. The LR-500 is programmable and can be set to just those channels you need.
    How many channels can I program into the LR-500?
    1 to 57 (17 channels with 863 MHz). The receiver has 57 (17 channels with 863 MHz) channels and you can program it to have just the channels you want to access. It can be a two channel receiver, a 12 channel receiver, or keep all channels.
    How many receivers can I have in a system?
    As many as you need, the number is endless.
    What is the function of SQ?
    To reduce noise of its systems, Listen now offers a noise reduction technology called ListenSQ™ (on 72 MHz and 216 MHZ only). Both the transmitter and receiver must have SQ on to achieve the desired results. If you are planning to use this product with older Listen systems or equipment not manufactured by Listen, you should disable SQ.
     
    What is the warranty of Listen receivers?
    Limited lifetime warranty. The following cases will void the warranty:
    • Misuse, dropping, or any other noticeable cosmetic damage.
    • Charging alkaline batteries instead of NiMH.
    • Overheating the charging process by closing the lid on the charging case.
     
    How long do the batteries last on the LR-500 receiver?
    Alkaline batteries last 30 hours. NiMH rechargeable batteries last 15 hours (72 MHz and 216 MHz). With 863 MHz, Alkaline batteries last 20 hours and NiMH rechargeable batteries last 10 hours

    Troubleshooting Guide

    My receiver won't turn ON.

    • Make sure that your batteries are installed with the correct polarity.
    • Your batteries may need to be replaced.

    I can hear some static in the audio. There is only static present.

    • The receiver is not on the correct channel. Press seek until you find the correct channel.
    • There are no transmissions in the area.
    • Make sure that the transmitter is transmitting properly.
    • The receiver is out of reception range.
    • The receiving antenna, which is the headset/earpiece cord, needs to be better oriented to pick up the signal better.

    The audio is intermittent.

    • The receiver is out of reception range.
    • The receiver is not on the correct channel. Press seek until you find the correct channel.
    • The squelch setting of the receiver needs to be set to a lower setting (Default 3). This will allow weaker signals to be heard. However, the receiver may be noisier when signals are weak.
    • The receiving antenna, which is the headset/earpiece cord, needs to be better oriented to pick up the signal better.
    • Make sure that the transmitter is transmitting properly.

    The audio sounds distorted.

    • The transmitter is being over driven. Adjust the input and mix level VU meters (front panel LED level lights) so that they are not in the red or adjust so they are barely peaking into the red. Make sure that the rear panel Input 1 and Input 2 level select switches are in the correct position.
    • The receiver is turned up all the way. Turn down the volume slightly on the receiver to avoid distortion.
    • The receiver is not on the correct channel. Press seek until you find a clean channel.
    • The receiving antenna, which is the headset/earpiece cord, needs to be better oriented to pick up the signal better.

    The audio level is very low, even at full volume

    • Adjust the input and mix level VU meters (front panel LED level lights) so that they are not in the red or adjust so they are barely peaking into the red. Make sure that the rear panel Input 1 and Input 2 level select switches are in the correct position.
    • On the transmitter, adjust the input and mix level VU meters (front panel LED level lights) so that they are not in the red or adjust so they are barely peaking into the red.
    • Your input source to the transmitter is a low level audio source. On the transmitter, the "Process" mode can be turned ON to boost the signal to an appropriate level.

    My receiver will not seek or change channels.

    • The receiver is locked. To unlock, press and hold the SEEK button for 5 seconds. The red LED on top of the unit will flash indicating the lock has been toggled and the Padlock icon will extinguish on the LCD display.
    • There are no transmissions in the area.
    • The receiver is out of reception range.

    How do I know when my batteries are low?

    • The red LED on top of the unit will begin flashing.
    • The battery icon on the LCD display will display low batteries and begin flashing when extremely low.
    • The receiver keeps turning off.

    My receiver won't charge.

    • Make sure you are using NiMH batteries.
    • Make sure the battery select switch, located in the battery compartment, is in the NiMH position.
    • Make sure that the power cord is plugged in properly.
    • If using a charging case, make sure that the receiver is properly placed in the charging pocket.

    The batteries in my receiver won't hold a charge.

    • It is time to replace the batteries. Listen recommends that the batteries be replaced every 3 years or after 500 charges.
    • Make sure that the receiver is actually receiving the charge. The red LED on top of the receiver will flash when charging.
    • Make sure that the unit is being turned off when not in use.

    How do I lock out channels?

    • Enter the program mode by holding the UP and DOWN buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds. The PGM icon will appear. Once in the program mode, scroll through the channels using the UP and Down buttons. Pressing the Seek button will toggle each channel in and out of Lockout. When a channel is locked out, L/O will be displayed on the LCD indicating that channel is locked out.

    How do I adjust squelch on my receiver? Where should I have it set?

    • Hold down the SEEK button while turning the unit ON. The receiver will enter the Squelch Mode. There are 20 available squelch settings, Default is 3. 0 is no squelch and 20 is tight squelch.

    The range of my receiver is very short.

    • The receiving antenna, which is the headset/earpiece cord, needs to be better oriented to pick up the signal better.
    • The transmitter's RF Power setting needs to be increased to Full.
    • A more efficient transmitting or receiving antenna mat be needed.
