Introduction: Auracast Assistive Listening System
The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham is committed to accessibility. It has implemented a groundbreaking assistive listening solution powered by Auracast™. With support from the Barnwood Trust, the theatre became one of the first UK venues to install the Auri™ system. The system delivers a transformative experience for audience members who are hard of hearing or visually impaired.
Challenge: Accessibility Barriers in Theatre Audio
The Everyman Theatre hosts a range of accessible performances throughout the year. These include audio-described, BSL-interpreted, captioned, and relaxed performances. However, many traditional solutions are not compatible with modern hearing aids. They also often require complex setup and distribution. The theatre needed a more seamless and flexible audio system. It also needed to improve accessibility for hearing-impaired visitors.
Solution: Implementing the Auracast Assistive Listening System
Ampetronic | Listen Technologies provided a complete Auri™ system, using Auracast™ broadcast audio to wirelessly stream high-quality sound directly to hearing aids, cochlear implants, earbuds, or smartphones. The installation included three AURI TX2N-D transmitters to broadcast the audio, supported by two AURI D16 docking stations for efficient charging and management, and 32 AURI RX1 receivers for patrons who may not have compatible personal devices. This system allows audience members to connect to the theatre’s audio stream as easily as joining a Wi-Fi network, combining cutting-edge accessibility with simple, user-friendly operation.
Result: Audience Impact and Feedback
Since its installation, the Auri™ system has been described as “game changing.” It offers users an intuitive way to connect to performance audio, dramatically enhancing both accessibility and audience engagement. The system supports daily use by those needing a volume boost and is also employed during special performances designed for visually impaired or neurodivergent audiences.
Audience feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with patrons calling the services “life changing.” One guest, attending the theatre for the first time since losing their sight, shared that the experience was “completely transformative for their wellbeing and social engagement.”
With Auri™, the Everyman Theatre continues to set the standard for inclusive live entertainment—ensuring everyone can enjoy the magic of theatre, without compromise.
