With international travel achieving seven consecutive years of growth, we’re gearing up for another record-setting tourism season.

Whether its easing restrictions and extended visas for China’s outbound travel market or the healthy growth of Asia and EU countries like the UK and Germany, tourism continues to be viewed through a positive lens.

With international travel departures more than doubling over the last two decades from 600 million to 1.3 billion, the future for our industry looks bright. By 2027, the World Travel and Tourism Council forecasts more than 2 billion international tourist arrivals worldwide, providing our sector “an enormous opportunity to further showcase the tremendous economic, social, cultural, environmental, and heritage value that the sector can bring.”

Iconic Landmarks Most Booked Globally

TripAdvisor’s 2018 Experiential Travel Trends report reveals that while traveller’s behaviours are changing, iconic landmarks continue to be the most-booked by travellers globally. The growth of city trips bodes well for the world’s top destinations where savvy tour operators are achieving year-over-year growth.

Tourism growth is creating new opportunities for guides and operators. In just one year, guides and operators have added more than 30,000 new experiences to TripAdvisor’s platform, “increasing the number of available experiences, tours, and attractions by 50%.”

As this growth trend continues, the Travel & Tourism industry remains strong and will continue to make a significant economic impact on the global economy. Deloitte reports vital growth drivers for 2018 include a “strengthening global economy” where “the global traveller pool is flooded with millions of new consumers from both emerging and developed markets, many with rising disposable incomes and a newfound ability to experience the world.”

Setting New Records

The global tourism industry once again sets new records in 2017, and further markets are expected to emerge. According to the World Travel Monitor®, a new international growth market may be “Muslim millennials,” a forecasted growth market over the next decade. With strong growth from emerging markets, global travel continues to turn heads.

For the first time in history, more than 300 million international travellers arrived in the Northern Hemisphere during peak tourism season (between July and August). With international tourism arrivals up 7% during the first eight months of 2017, it’s more important than ever to be implementing your foreign language strategy.

If you’re looking for more information about your destination’s top foreign language markets, we encourage you to reach out to your local Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) or Destination Marketing Organization (DMO). Many CVBs track international arrivals and can help you to identify your top inbound foreign language markets.
