Live Captions – Now Available on Your Smartphone

Enable Live Captions on Your Phone for Captioning in Listen EVERYWHERE

Live captions are now available on your smartphone. Captions are spoken dialogue turned into text and displayed in either real time like at a live event, or for recorded programming where the captioning is added after being recorded. There is real-time captioning that is machine generated and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) – real-time captions that are generated by people with computer assistance.

For those with hearing loss, sometimes live captioning enhances their ability to listen to what they can hear and helps their brain with words or phrases they either may not hear or miss because their brain is trying to understand or comprehend other parts of the dialogue.  

Live Captions Now Available on both iOS and Android

Live captions are now available on your smartphone as iOS and Android now both fully support live machine captioning from any media on your smartphone, including Listen EVERYWHERE! The “live captions” feature means any speech on your device can now be transformed into text and displayed on your screen. Whether you are watching a YouTube video, listening to your favorite podcast, or even streaming audio at your local church using Listen EVERYWHERE, captioning is now easily accessible. 

Listen EVERYWHERE makes it easy for guests to listen to live audio using their smartphones, and now they can also elect to have captions.  To use live captions, users turn on live captioning in the accessibility settings on their device.   

Activating Live Captions on an iOS Device

Live Captioning for installed iOS apps can
only be set through the Settings menu.

1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Live
   Captions (Beta).
2. Turn on Live Captions, then tap
   Appearance to customize the text,
   size, and color of the captions.

Activating Live Captions on an Android Device

Live captions are enabled through the settings menu. Please note that different
Android devices have different menu layouts. This is only a guide; your menu may differ.

Live Captions in Listen EVERYWHERE App

With live captions enabled, live captions are automatically generated when the device detects incoming speech from audio channels. Simply open the Listen Everywhere app and select a channel; the captions will appear regardless of your device’s volume. Captions are not saved anywhere and once they disappear from the screen, they are gone.
